Beginner's Guide to Getting Your Motorcycle Licence

A clear, step-by-step guide to obtaining your full motorcycle licence in the UK

    Before You Start

    Licence Requirements

UK Provisional or Full Car Licence:

You can book your CBT course directly with us.

    International Licence (Non-EU):

You must apply for a UK provisional driving licence first.

    EU Licence:

You need to either exchange it for a UK licence or register it with the DVLA. You'll need your original licence and the DVLA registration document to book your CBT.

Your Journey to a Full Motorcycle Licence

    1

Decide What You Want to Ride

Consider what type of motorcycle suits your needs, how you plan to use it, and the distances you'll be traveling regularly. This will help determine which licence category you should aim for.

💡 Tip: If you're unsure, start with CBT and a 125cc bike to gain experience before committing to a full licence course.

    2

Complete Your CBT (Compulsory Basic Training)

    What is CBT?

CBT is a one-day training course that teaches you the basics of riding a motorcycle or scooter safely. You must be at least 17 years old to take the course (16 for mopeds).

What You Can Ride After CBT:
    • • Motorcycles/scooters up to 125cc
    • • Maximum power: 11kW
    • • Valid for 2 years
    Restrictions:
    • • Must display L-plates
    • • No passengers allowed
    • • No motorway riding
    3

    Pass Your Motorcycle Theory Test

The theory test is required for all full motorcycle licences (A1, A2, and A). It consists of multiple-choice questions and a hazard perception test.

Note: You don't need to pass the theory test to do CBT training, but you'll need it before taking your practical motorcycle test.
